We already thought we were awesum. But now we are sure, because...

Sumthing is officially a certified B Corp!

Ever since we founded Sumthing, we were dedicated to do the right thing. Of course, it’s our goal to restore more nature than we lose. That’s a pretty righteous goal to aim for. And the fact that we are Steward Owned also shows that we are doing quite good in terms of governance. But there’s more to doing right. The B Impact Assessment challenged us to look at ‘doing right’ in a broader perspective. And it therefore made absolute sense to pursue B Corp certification.

What does the B Corp certification mean?
Certified B Corporations, or B Corps, are companies that meet high standards of social and environmental performance, transparency, and accountability. To become a certified B Corp, you need to pass the B Impact Assessment. This assessment evaluates your company’s practices and outputs across five categories: governance, workers, community, the environment, and customers.

The B Impact Assessment has shown us where we are doing good and where we can still improve. Turns out there is quite sum things that we can improve. Some easy, some more difficult. The good thing is that a B Corp must recertify every three years. This means we have three years to improve, and to ace the recertification with an all-time high score.

One score we definitely want to smash next time is the pillar environment. What nature restoration platform can score a lousy 2 on environment? One that holds office in an anti-squat building and cannot access data on their office emissions. Yup, that’s right. We hope to stay in our ridiculously awesum (and cheap!) office for many more years, so one way or the other, we are going to dig up that data!

Getting B Corp certified is not only proof of that we are doing the right thing. It also makes our lives easier. Every tried explaining the concept of steward ownership at a party? Blank stares guaranteed. On the contrary, a B Corp certification instantly resonates. It’s a simple explanation that we are using business as a force for good.

We are excited to be part of the B Corp community. We are looking forward to set up partnerships with other B Corps, to enhance both our own nature restoration movement and to contribute to the broader movement towards doing good. To all fellow B Corps reading this, let's get in touch to level up our shared impact!
